Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan agree on new steps in economy and transport

On 25 November, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov and President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held negotiations in Astana. The parties discussed the economy, transport and prospects for expanding partnership, according to IIC.

The visit began with a welcoming ceremony at the ‘Akorda’ Palace. The leaders of the states greeted the delegations, after which they held negotiations. The main focus was on the development of the ‘North-South’ corridor and the ‘Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran’ railway. Serdar Berdimuhamedov reported on the progress of infrastructure projects, including the bridge across the Garabogazgol Bay and the construction of a road from Turkmenbashi to the Kazakh border.

During the visit, the President of Kazakhstan presented the President of Turkmenistan with Kazakhstan's highest award, the Order of ‘Altyn Qyran’. The award was given for his contribution to strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

Following the negotiations, a Joint Statement and a number of agreements were signed. The agreements cover transport, digitalisation, agriculture and media. An action plan for transport for 2025-2026 was also approved.

As part of the visit programme, the President of Turkmenistan visited the ‘Älem.AI’ International Artificial Intelligence Centre. The parties noted their interest in exchanging experience in the IT sphere and implementing digital solutions.
