UNICEF and the UK are developing inclusive schools in Turkmenistan

UNICEF and the British Embassy in Turkmenistan have joined forces to support inclusive education reform. The partnership will continue to fund a pilot project that, for the first time in the country, systematically integrates children with disabilities into the general education system, according to the news website Asmannews. The project is based in two schools and two kindergartens in Ashgabat with the aim of creating a national model for subsequent scaling up. The main areas of work are infrastructure and accessibility, combating stigma and training. The initiative is being implemented in conjunction with the Ministry of Education and supports the National Concept of Inclusive Education. British Ambassador Stephen Conlon called the project an important step towards removing barriers, while UNICEF Representative in Turkmenistan Jalpa Ratna emphasised that it helps every child, including children with disabilities, to learn and develop in an inclusive environment.


Turkmenistan develops expertise in renewable energy at training course in Florence

A delegation from Turkmenistan took part in a training course on the regulation and integration of renewable energy, which was held from 29 September to 1 October 2025 at the European University Institute in Florence (Italy). This was reported by the news website Asmannews. The event, organised by the Florence School of Regulation (FSR) in collaboration with European partners, brought together politicians, regulators and experts from around the world. The Turkmen delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, State Concern ‘Türkmengaz’, the Ministry of Energy and the State Energy Institute. The programme included discussions on international experience in the field of renewable energy, investment support mechanisms, network development, and innovative Power-to-X technologies. Participation in the course was part of the EU-funded project ‘EU for a green Turkmenistan: Policy Dialogue and Climate Action 2024-2028’, financed by the EU and the German Foreign Ministry, and was a step towards strengthening international cooperation and promoting sustainable development goals.


Turkmen schoolchildren are ready to amaze the world with their math skills

Secondary school students from Turkmenistan will take part in the Junior Mental Calculation World Championship, which will be held from 4 to 6 October in Bielefeld, Germany. This was reported by the news agency ‘Turkmenistan: Golden age’. The tournament has been held since 2008 and annually attracts over 100 participants from nearly 20 countries. Contestants compete in three age categories, performing mental arithmetic tasks ranging from basic operations to fractions and factorisation. The country will be represented by eight schoolchildren who passed the qualifying competition in the spring of this year. All of them are students of the ‘Kämil bilim’ education centre and study at specialised schools in Ashgabat, Balkanabat and Turkmenabat. The team was formed in April after an internal competition, where the teenagers successfully completed tasks at the world championship level.


Turkmen teachers learn nanotechnology in Japan

Two lecturers from the Oguz Han University of Engineering and Technology in Turkmenistan are undergoing training at the Innovation Centre for NanoMedicine (iCONM) in Kawasaki, Japan, from 1 to 17 October. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan. The trip was organised as part of a Memorandum of Understanding between the university and iCONM to exchange scientific experience and develop advanced technologies. The iCONM centre specialises in nanotechnology, nanomedicine and nanomaterials. The visit is aimed at improving the qualifications of teachers, developing joint scientific projects and strengthening international cooperation in the field of higher education. The knowledge gained will help to introduce innovative methods in the training of young engineers in Turkmenistan.


Turkmen students went to Tsukuba University for a year of study

Students from the Dovletmammet Azadi Turkmen National Institute of World Languages have been given the opportunity to study in Japan for a year. This was reported by the news website Asmannews. One of the students from the Faculty of Oriental Languages and Literature (preparatory pedagogical department) has been sent to study at Tsukuba University as part of an exchange and cooperation agreement between the two universities. Another student from the same faculty successfully passed the entrance exams and was enrolled in a one-year internship programme in Japanese language and culture, implemented by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in the 2025-2026 academic year. Such educational initiatives provide students with practical experience and promote international cooperation in the scientific and academic spheres, as well as helping to train specialists with a high level of professional and cultural competence.


International Olympiad from Turkmen university will bring together future leaders

The International University for the Humanities and Development (IUHD) has announced the second International Olympiad in Philosophy and Economics for university students from Turkmenistan and other countries. This was reported by the news agency ‘Turkmenistan: Golden age’. The competition will be held online from 20 to 24 October in one round. The working languages will be Turkmen, Russian and English. All interested students are eligible to participate, and there is no limit to the number of applicants from a single university. The Philosophy and Economics Olympiads will be held in two categories: Category A will include students of any specialisation, and Category B will include those who do not study relevant disciplines. Registration is open until 12 October on the IUHD website: iuhd.edu.tm/competitions. Universities can also propose tasks — 20 test questions and 5 theoretical questions, which must be sent to the organising committee 20 days before the start of the competition. The organisers emphasise that the aim of the Olympiads is to support talented young people, stimulate scientific and creative activity, and develop international cooperation and knowledge exchange between students and teachers.


Turkmen students learn the secrets of a world leader in agricultural machinery

Students and teachers majoring in Agricultural Mechanisation at the Turkmen Agricultural Institute and the S.A. Niyazov Turkmen Agricultural University completed a joint internship in Germany and the Netherlands. This was reported by the news website Asmannews. The programme focused on studying modern John Deere machinery and equipment and applying theoretical knowledge in practice. In the German city of Mannheim, participants visited a tractor manufacturing plant, learned about the company's history and production processes, including the full assembly cycle and automation. The students also visited a factory in Bruchsal and a central spare parts warehouse. In Kaiserslautern, at the company's European Technology and Innovation Centre, students learned how to use the ‘Work Planner’ programme for digital management of agricultural machinery. The delegation visited a factory in Horst (Netherlands), where mounted and self-propelled sprayers are manufactured. The students studied various models, as well as innovative systems for precise fertiliser application and plant spraying. The programme also included excursions to technical museums and historical sites. The internship gave students valuable experience working with the advanced technologies of the world leader in agricultural machinery manufacturing.


Hydrogen Energy Centre opens in Turkmenistan

A Hydrogen Energy Centre has been established at the Yagshygeldi Kakayev International University of Oil and Gas. This was reported by the Orient news agency. The centre has already presented its first results: research has been conducted on the production of ‘green’ hydrogen by electrolysis, and a facility has been created to obtain it from natural gas using plasma chemical technologies. Cooperation has been established with international partners, including Tsukuba University, ‘Iwatani’ and ‘Kawasaki Heavy Industries’, the IAEA and Imperial College London, to train specialists and exchange experience. Seminars and advanced training courses are held for employees of the State Concerns ‘Türkmengaz’ and ‘Türkmennebit’, as well as the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan. During the recent visit of the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov, to Japan, a Memorandum was signed with the University of Tsukuba on joint research and educational programmes for 2025–2026.


Turkmen students to undergo training in Japan

As part of the Memorandum of Academic Exchange and Cooperation between the Oguz Han Engineering and Technology University of Turkmenistan and Tsukuba University (Japan), three Turkmen students will travel to Japan to study. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan. The programme is scheduled to run from 1 October 2025 to 31 August 2026 and covers engineering, computer science, humanities and advanced technologies. The implementation of this educational initiative is an important step in the development of science and the strengthening of international cooperation. Turkmen students successfully competed at the WSDG 2025 competition in Malaysia

Students from the Oguz Han Engineering and Technology University of Turkmenistan successfully participated in the ‘World Sustainable Development Goal Challenge’ (WSDG 2025) competition organised by Multimedia University and the Malaysian Young Scientists Organisation. This was reported by the news agency ‘Turkmenistan: Golden age’. More than 2,100 scientific works by students from 15 countries participated in the competition. The gold medal and the ‘WSDG Innovation Grand Award’ went to Suleymanmuhammet Shamuhammedov, a fourth-year student at the Faculty of Chemical Technology, for his work ‘Scientific Foundations for the Production of Green Cement for Sustainable Development,’ dedicated to environmentally friendly methods of cement production and efficient energy use. The gold medal and prize ‘Best Innovation in Sustainable Development’ was awarded to the work ‘Innovative Technology for Producing Pure Gypsum from Phosphogypsum—an Industrial Waste’, prepared by Aymyrat Halnazarov, a third-year student of the Faculty of Chemical Technology, and Jemal Sharipova, a third-year student of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering. The study proposed an environmentally friendly and economically viable method of processing industrial waste into building materials. The scientific supervisor of the national team, Atamyrat Altyev, Candidate of Technical Sciences, made a significant contribution to these successes.


A meeting with the AQA Global delegation was held at the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan

On 18 September, the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan hosted a meeting with a delegation from the British company AQA Global Assessment Services, which included Director of International Business Development Sean Crowley, Director of Assessment Systems Anna Green, and Regional Consultant Vali Guseyn. This was reported by the news agency Orient. The parties discussed prospects for cooperation in improving the quality of education and assessment systems, taking into account the needs of the labour market. AQA has extensive international experience, ranging from the implementation of national certification and qualification standardisation systems to the digitisation of testing. In particular, in Uzbekistan, the company participated in the development of a new assessment model for secondary schools, and in Kazakhstan, it participated in the creation of a criteria-based system for graduates. The future partnership involves the exchange of experience in the field of examination platforms and certification, the introduction of digital solutions, the development of uniform qualification standards and methodological support for teachers. Particular emphasis is placed on the application of international standards in the planning of educational reforms.


Turkmenistan and Japan discussed expanding educational cooperation

On 16 September, Turkmenistan's Minister of Education J. Gurbangeldiyev met with Hiroshi Sasaki, Japan's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Turkmenistan. During the talks, the parties discussed long-term prospects for cooperation in the field of education. This was reported by the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan. The positive dynamics of cooperation, which gained new momentum after the April visit of the President of Turkmenistan to Japan, was noted. Particular attention was paid to the growing interest of Turkmen youth in learning Japanese, which is now studied by thousands of students and schoolchildren in the country. During the meeting, specific proposals were discussed for the implementation of joint training programmes in the field of hydrogen energy. Issues related to the professional development of teachers of exact sciences through JICA and MEXT programmes were considered, as well as the coordination of the work of educational institutions in Turkmenistan where Japanese is taught. The Japanese side was invited to participate in an international exhibition and scientific conference on education and healthcare, which will be held in Ashgabat in October this year. The parties confirmed their commitment to further strengthening their educational partnership and expressed confidence in the successful implementation of the planned projects.
