During the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasised the country's commitment to sustainable development goals and outlined priority areas for cooperation: transport, energy, digital transformation and ecology. This was reported by the state news agency TDH.

Turkmenistan proposed to proclaim the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2035), continuing to implement initiatives to create an effective global transport architecture, including the development of multimodal corridors and the revival of the Great Silk Road.

In the energy sector, the country is promoting the idea of creating an Alliance for Global Energy Security and is implementing a strategy of diversifying supplies with an emphasis on ‘green’ technologies. An initiative for a Global Hydrogen Energy Transition Programme (2030-2040) has also been put forward.

Particular attention is paid to climate and environmental issues. Serdar Berdimuhamedov has proposed the creation of a Regional Centre for Combating Desertification and a Regional Centre for Climate Technologies for the countries of Central Asia. Turkmenistan continues to develop the Caspian Environmental Initiative and actively participates in international programmes to reduce methane emissions.

In the field of water resources, Turkmenistan intends to promote the adoption of UN Regional Conventions on the Amu Darya and Syr Darya basins, as well as the implementation of the UN Special Programme for the Aral Sea Basin.

Overall, Turkmenistan demonstrates its commitment to strengthening its partnership with the UN by advocating for equitable, sustainable and inclusive development and promoting the resolution of global challenges in the interests of peace and cooperation.
