On 20 October, in New York, at the office of the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the United Nations, a Joint Communiqué was signed on the establishment of diplomatic relations between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Botswana. This was reported by the press service of the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Turkmenistan.

Prior to the ceremony, the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN, Aksoltan Atayeva, and the Permanent Representative of Botswana, Charles Masole, discussed prospects for cooperation and confirmed their mutual interest in developing friendly relations.

The interlocutors noted the importance of strengthening political, economic and humanitarian ties, as well as cooperation within international organisations, primarily the UN. Issues of peace, trust, preventive diplomacy and sustainable development were discussed.

A. Atayeva invited representatives of Botswana to participate in the International Forum dedicated to the International Year of Peace and Trust and the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan's permanent neutrality.

Following the meeting, the parties emphasised that the establishment of diplomatic relations would be an important step in the development of a long-term partnership between the two countries.
