Turkmenistan is stepping up its participation in regional initiatives aimed at effective water resource management. A delegation from the country took part in the Tashkent seminar ‘Water Issues in Central Asia’, organised as part of the ‘Blue Peace Central Asia’ (BPCA) programme, according to AsmanNews.

Representatives of relevant water management agencies and international organisations took part in the discussions. The Turkmen side was represented by specialists from the State Water Management Committee, the Ministries of Environment and Education, as well as researchers from the Centre for Strategic Studies of the Institute of International Relations of the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Turkmenistan.

During the forum sessions, participants discussed issues of joint management of small transboundary watercourses and identified key areas of cooperation for the medium term. Significant attention was paid to issues of rational water use and measures to adapt to the effects of climate change.

Regional coordination, enhanced information exchange and alignment with national development strategies remain key elements of cooperation among Central Asian states in the water sector.
