On 4 June, at the 75th plenary meeting of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Turkmenistan was re-elected to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the period 2026–2028. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
ECOSOC plays a key role in coordinating the economic and social activities of both the United Nations itself and the institutions within its system. The Council plays a central role in promoting sustainable development, covering economic, social and environmental aspects.
ECOSOC consists of 54 member states elected by the General Assembly for a three-year term. Each year, 18 new members are elected from regional groups to replace countries whose terms have expired.
Turkmenistan has already been a member of ECOSOC twice, from 2013 to 2015 and from 2019 to 2021.
