Turkmenistan and Iran are stepping up cooperation in the field of rail transport

A delegation from Turkmenistan, led by Minister of Rail Transport M. Akmammedov, paid a working visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran from 6 to 8 September. During the visit, negotiations was held with Minister of Roads and Urban Development of the Islamic Republic of Iran F. Sadeg and Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Head of the Railway Department J. Zakeri. This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

The key topic of the negotiations was the expansion of trade and economic partnership between the two countries in the railway sector. The parties discussed specific proposals to increase transit cargo volumes, in particular, within the framework of intensifying the work of the China-Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran and ‘Ashgabat Agreement’ (Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Oman corridors).

An agreement was reached on developing cooperation to increase trade between the member countries of the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) and ensuring the effective operation of the Armenia-Iran-Turkmenistan-Kazakhstan transit route. During the practical part of the visit, the Turkmen delegation familiarised itself with the work of the carriage control centre in Tehran, the potential of the ‘Aprin’ dry port, and visited the Akyayla-Incheburun railway crossing to assess the work being carried out there.
