Turkmenistan has officially put itself forward as a candidate for election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period 2031–2032. This was reported by the IIC of Turkmenistan.

This candidacy reflects the country’s foreign policy, which is based on the principles of permanent neutrality, peacemaking and preventive diplomacy. Following the recognition of its neutral status by the UN General Assembly in 1995, Turkmenistan has been developing cooperation with international partners, including within the framework of the Cooperation Framework Programme for 2026–2030.

Among the arguments in support of its candidacy, the country highlights the activities of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia in Ashgabat, as well as international initiatives to strengthen peace and security.

Turkmenistan’s initiatives are aimed at developing a collective security system and preventing conflicts in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter.
