On 16 July, the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, held a meeting with the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. This was reported by the news website TerraNews.

The sides discussed strengthening strategic ties, noting the fraternal nature of relations, historical proximity and high level of mutual understanding. The agenda covered politics, economy, culture and humanitarian sphere.

The common desire to comply with international law was emphasised. In addition, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov congratulated Azerbaijan on the successful holding of the ECO summit in Khankendi.

The visit is seen as an important step in the development of bilateral dialogue and strategic partnership.
