The OSCE seminar in Ashgabat was dedicated to alternatives to imprisonment
10.05.2026An OSCE seminar dedicated to probation measures as an alternative to imprisonment was held in Ashgabat on May 7–8, 2026. Representatives of Turkmenistan’s law enforcement, legislative, and judicial bodies took part in the event. This was reported by AsmanNews. The event was organized by the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat. Its purpose was to study international experience in reducing the prison population and developing alternative sentencing measures, including probation, parole, and rehabilitation programs. Experts from Moldova presented practical approaches to the work of probation services and spoke about the evolution of punishment strategies. Issues related to the reintegration of former convicts into society were also discussed separately. Participants also examined the impact of alternative measures on reducing recidivism and easing pressure on the penitentiary system. The seminar presented international standards of the UN and regional organizations in the field of non-custodial penalties, as well as approaches to their implementation at the national level. William Leaf, Head of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat, noted that in a number of countries there is a growing emphasis on rehabilitation and the prevention of repeat offenses. The discussions involved 20 representatives from the Mejlis of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Prosecutor General’s Office, and other agencies.

Turkmenistan and Cambodia discussed the development of political dialogue

Gurbanov held a series of meetings in Phnom Penh on May 8–9, 2026, as part of the visit of the country’s delegation to the Kingdom of Cambodia. The talks took place with representatives of the government and the business community, according to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. During a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of State, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, Ith Sophy, the sides noted the high level of the first political consultations between the foreign ministries. It was emphasized that they will continue to develop bilateral agreements and expand cooperation. The discussions covered political-diplomatic, trade-economic, and cultural-humanitarian areas. The sides advocated for the intensification of political dialogue, the development of contacts at the level of governments and parliaments, as well as the expansion of the legal framework. Cooperation within international organizations, including the UN, was also considered. At a meeting with the President of the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce, Neak Oknha Kith Meng, prospects for economic cooperation were discussed. The sides noted the importance of direct contacts between entrepreneurs, the holding of business forums, trade missions, and online meetings. Priorities included digital trade, participation in exhibitions, exchange of delegations, development of small and medium-sized enterprises, and cooperation between special economic zones. A meeting was also held with Cambodia’s Minister of Tourism, Huot Hak. Joint projects in the tourism sector, exchange of experience, and promotion of cultural heritage were discussed. The sides agreed to prepare a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of tourism. Following the meetings, the commitment to developing a long-term partnership between Turkmenistan and Cambodia was reaffirmed.
Diplomats in Ashgabat commemorated the 81st anniversary of Victory
10.05.2026In Ashgabat, diplomats from CIS countries and several other states laid flowers at the Eternal Flame at the “Halk Hakydasy” memorial complex. The ceremony was held in honor of the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, Turkmenportal reports. The event was led by the ambassadors of Russia and Belarus to Turkmenistan, Ivan Volynkin and Stanislav Chepurnoi. It was also attended by representatives of diplomatic missions from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Malaysia, and other countries. The memory of the fallen was also honored by Orthodox clergy and residents of the capital. The “People’s Memory” memorial complex was inaugurated on October 6, 2014, on the Day of Remembrance. It consists of three compositions: “Eternal Glory,” dedicated to those who died in the Great Patriotic War; “Spiritual Tribute,” dedicated to the victims of the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake; and “Sons of the Fatherland,” in memory of the defenders of the Geok Tepe fortress who died in 1881.
An OSCE Course on the Circular Economy Was Held in Ashgabat

The Turkmen Delegation familiarized itself with the “Capital Smart City” project in Pakistan

Turkmenistan and the ILO have approved a cooperation plan for 2026–2027
