Turkmen school receives equipment from OSCE

As part of an educational initiative, the OSCE Programme Office in Ashgabat donated digital equipment worth more than €19,000, including computers, an interactive whiteboard and office equipment, to Secondary School No. 28 in the Tagtabazar etrap to improve the learning process. This was reported by the IIC. The OSCE Programme Office in Ashgabat (BOMCA) supported the development of education in border areas by donating modern digital equipment worth 19,073 euros to Secondary School No. 28 in Tagtabazar etrap, Mary velayat. The equipment includes 26 personal computers with monitors, an interactive whiteboard, a laser printer, webcams and network equipment, which will create modern conditions for effective learning for schoolchildren.


Turkmenistan expressed its commitment to environmental diplomacy at a forum in Altai

During the Forum on Ecology in the Altai Republic, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Nokerguly Atagulyev confirmed the country's commitment to environmental diplomacy and sustainable development. This was reported by the IIC of Turkmenistan. The Deputy Prime Minister thanked the organisers and emphasised the relevance of the topics discussed at the event. N.Atagulyev recalled that Turkmenistan participates in a number of key international environmental agreements, including the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Over the past 20 years, more than 162 million trees have been planted in Turkmenistan, and the network of nature reserves is expanding. Work is underway to ensure the rational use of transboundary waters and the introduction of water-saving technologies. Turkmenistan is also developing renewable energy, with solar and wind power plants under construction and a Road map for the city of Arkadag being developed. Desert ecosystems have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. N. Atagulyev emphasised that in the year of the 30th anniversary of its neutrality, Turkmenistan is open to international cooperation in the field of ecology.


Turkmenistan participated in a meeting on improving air quality in Central Asia

Turkmenistan took part in the first high-level regional policy dialogue ‘Building a Clean Air Future in Central Asia’ held on 19 July in Tashkent. This was reported by the IIC of Turkmenistan. The forum, organised by the Ministry of Ecology of Uzbekistan in cooperation with the World Bank and UNEP, brought together experts and government officials from Asian and European countries. The main topic was cooperation in the fight against air pollution. Participants from Central Asian countries discussed ways to improve the environmental situation in the region. Turkmenistan's participation in the dialogue demonstrates its readiness for environmental cooperation and its commitment to strengthening national air protection strategies.


Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan prepare joint nomination of natural heritage

A meeting was held at the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan to discuss the nomination of the Koytendag (Turkmenistan) and Surkhan (Uzbekistan) nature reserves for inclusion in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List. The event was held in a hybrid format with the participation of representatives of international and national organisations, including the Michael Succow Foundation (Germany), Conservation X Labs (USA), the Slovak Speleological Society, environmental agencies of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, as well as experts from the CXLs project. Participants discussed a draft Declaration of Cooperation, a Roadmap, UNESCO criteria and the text of the Tentative List entitled ‘Karst, Caves and Canyons of Kugitang’. Further steps to promote the nomination were also agreed upon. Turkmen specialists will continue to work with international and Uzbek partners, taking into account the updated requirements of the World Heritage Committee.


Turkmenistan took part in a seminar on the revival of rural areas in Central Asia

An international training course on sustainable development of the Caspian Sea is being held in Turkmenistan

An international training course entitled ‘Caspian Sea – Sustainable Development and Management’ is being held in Ashgabat from 14 to 25 July this year, organised with the support of the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Turkmenistan, the Caspian Sea Institute and the International Ocean Institute. The event brought together experts from five Caspian countries to discuss pressing issues of marine resource management, ecology and international cooperation. This was reported by the online publication ‘Turkmenistan: Golden age’. Representatives from Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, including diplomats, environmentalists and maritime industry experts, are participating in the training course. Turkmenistan is represented by employees of key agencies – the state corporations ‘Türkmengaz’, ‘Türkmennebit’ and ‘Türkmengeologiýa’, as well as the ministries of justice, environmental protection, finance and economy. The course programme includes lectures, discussions and practical sessions on hydrometeorology, legal regulation, economic cooperation and environmental safety in the Caspian Sea. Particular attention is paid to the development of partnerships and the exchange of experience between the Caspian littoral states.


Turkmenistan will host international exhibition ‘Turkmentel – 2025’

From 12 to 14 November, Ashgabat will host the International Exhibition and Conference ‘Turkmentel – 2025’, dedicated to telecommunications, telemetry and digital technologies. FAO promotes aquaculture development in Turkmenistan

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is actively promoting the development of aquaculture in Turkmenistan, according to the news agency Orient. As part of a technical cooperation programme, two seminars were held in Ashgabat to train local farmers and veterinarians on aquatic animal health and fish farm design. The FAO uses a comprehensive approach, combining feeding, veterinary care and sound farm design, which contributes to increased efficiency, reduced costs and enhanced food security. On 16 July, a seminar on disease prevention in fish was held, where participants gained knowledge on diagnosis and risk management. On 17 July, a workshop on aquaculture systems design was held, covering everything from ponds and tanks to hatcheries, including biosecurity and production management. These initiatives lay the foundation for the sustainable development of the sector, contributing to economic growth and improved livelihoods in rural areas.

Turkmenistan's natural resources may be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List

On 16 July, a significant meeting with international and national experts was held at the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan. The event was held in a hybrid format, bringing together representatives of the Michael Succow Foundation (Germany), Conservation X Labs (USA), the Slovak Speleological Society, as well as relevant agencies and nature reserves of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. This was reported by IIC. The main topic of discussion was the preparation of a transboundary nomination of the Koytendag (Turkmenistan) and Surkhan (Uzbekistan) nature reserves as a single UNESCO World Heritage Site. This initiative has been a priority for Turkmenistan since 2015. Initially, the application concerned only Koytendag, but experts recommended joining forces with Uzbekistan to preserve the integrity of the mountain ecosystem. During the meeting, the participants agreed on a Declaration of Intent, a Roadmap and the criteria of the World Heritage Convention. The text of the Tentative List was also approved under a new name - ‘Karst, Caves and Canyons of the Kugitang Range’. Despite being divided by a state border, the Kugitang Range is a unique ecosystem with karst formations, hundreds of caves and deep canyons. Evidence of all major geological eras has been preserved here, including globally significant dinosaur footprints. Further work on the nomination will continue with the involvement of international and national experts, which will allow this unique natural heritage to be presented to the world.


Turkmenistan discusses National Strategy on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency

On 18 July, the second round table on finalising the National Strategy for Raising Public Awareness of the Benefits of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and Energy Efficiency was held at the ‘Ýyldyz’ Hotel in Ashgabat. The event was supported by the EU project ‘Political Dialogue and Climate Action 2024-2028’, implemented by GIZ and co-financed by the EU and the German Foreign Affairs Ministry. The meeting was attended by representatives of Turkmen ministries, the EU Delegation, UNDP, SECCA and RECA projects, as well as young SDG ambassadors, students and civil society organisations. The meeting was dedicated to discussing comments from ministries for finalising the document, taking into account national priorities, and agreeing on the final version. The strategy will serve as a roadmap for effectively informing the population of Turkmenistan about renewable energy and energy efficiency, contributing to the country's environmental and economic development.


OSCE Ashgabat Center will hold training for young journalists and bloggers
