Council of Elders meeting held in Ashgabat

On August 19, on the instructions of the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, a meeting of the Council of Elders under the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan and the Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov Charitable Foundation for Assistance to Children in Need of Guardianship was held at the ‘Maslahat köşgi’ Palace in Ashgabat. This was reported by the state news agency TDH. The meeting discussed the tasks of the Council, the role of elders in educating young people and strengthening spiritual and moral values, as well as issues of social support for children left without parental care. Special attention was paid to the admission of new members. Meretgeldi Gulgeldiyev and Italmaz Saparlyev, honorary elders of Turkmenistan, were elected to the Council for the city of Ashgabat, and Kakajan Tashliyev was elected for the Ahal velayat. The participants expressed their gratitude to the country's leadership for supporting the elders and emphasised their role in strengthening the unity of the people, passing on traditions and experience to younger generations, and solving important state tasks.

The Head of State noted that in the year of the 30th anniversary of neutrality and the International Year of Peace and Trust, the country's authority in the world arena is growing, and significant achievements have been made in all spheres. According to the President of Turkmenistan, the large-scale reforms initiated by the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, are changing the face of the state, and the country's residents are working hard to celebrate the 34th anniversary of independence with dignity. Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasised the role of culture and art in strengthening patriotism and humanism, as well as the importance of the programme to support creative workers and develop national performing arts. The Head of State called the ‘Çalsana, bagşy!’ competition an important tool for identifying talented young people. The President of Turkmenistan recalled the contribution of famous bakshys of the past and expressed confidence that young performers will continue to develop traditions and that the sounds of the dutar and ghijak will be heard throughout the world. The President of Turkmenistan sent a congratulatory letter to the leadership of Hungary

New Indian ambassador appointed to Turkmenistan

The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the appointment of Bandara Wilsonbabu as the country's new Ambassador to Turkmenistan, according to the news website Asmannews. Previously, B. Wilsonbabu represented India in Madagascar and also served as joint secretary in the department responsible for relations with the Eurasian region. According to official data, the diplomat will soon take up his duties. He will replace Madhumita Hazarika Bhagat, who has held the post since February 2024.

As part of the international forum ‘Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan – 2025’ (OGT 2025), which will be held from 22 to 24 October in Ashgabat, an exhibition of leading global companies, technology and equipment suppliers will take place alongside the conference. Turkmenistan and Palestine discussed expanding bilateral cooperation

On 19 August, Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Myahri Byashimova held a meeting with the Ambassador of the State of Palestine Rana Abu Hijleh, during which the course towards deepening partnership in the political, economic and humanitarian spheres was confirmed. During the negotiations, the diplomats conducted a detailed review of the current state of bilateral relations, paying particular attention to the prospects for the development of trade and economic interaction and cultural and humanitarian cooperation. The Palestinian diplomat expressed deep gratitude to the Turkmen side for its consistent humanitarian support to the Palestinian people. Following the meeting, the parties confirmed their mutual interest in further strengthening intergovernmental dialogue on key areas of cooperation.

A meeting between the newly appointed German Ambassador Ina Lepel and the Ambassador of Turkmenistan, A. Movlamov, took place in the capital of Pakistan, during which the parties discussed prospects for regional cooperation. The meeting of diplomats was devoted to discussing Turkmenistan's energy and transport initiatives involving Pakistan and Afghanistan, as well as the possible participation of German companies in their implementation. The Turkmen diplomat provided detailed information on his country's infrastructure and energy projects being implemented with the participation of Pakistan and Afghanistan, emphasising their importance for the economic development of the region. The German side expressed interest in the participation of German companies in these initiatives and noted their strategic importance. Turkmenistan participated in the 90th session of the ICWC

Within the framework of Kazakhstan's chairmanship of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS), the 90th meeting of the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination (ICWC) was held in Borovoe, with Turkmenistan participating online. This was reported by the IIC. The anniversary meeting on 14 August brought together the heads of water agencies of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and an observer from Kyrgyzstan. The Turkmen side was represented by Durdy Genjiev, Chairman of the State Committee for Water Management. As a key structural unit of the IFAS, the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination deals with issues of inter-state distribution of water resources for agricultural needs in the region. The commission's meetings are traditionally held twice a year to agree on water withdrawal quotas before the growing season. The meeting discussed water limits for 2025, the implementation of the decisions of the summits in Turkmenbashi (2018) and Dushanbe (2023), as well as improvements to the structure of the IFAS. Following the meeting, a protocol was signed stating that the next, 91st meeting of the commission will be held in Turkmenistan.

The Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the CIS, Nazarguly Shagulyev, attended the opening of the photo exhibition ‘Remembering the Past, Building the Future’ at the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War. The exhibition, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance of the Chinese people against Japanese invaders and the World Anti-Fascist War, was organised by the Chinese Embassy in Belarus and the Xinhua News Agency. The exhibition includes 70 historical and contemporary photographs from the Xinhua archives and the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall, demonstrating China's contribution to victory in World War II.

On 15 August, Turkmenistan's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Korea, Begench Durdyev, took part in celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day. The event was attended by President of the Republic of Korea Lee Jae-myung and members of the government, according to the press service of the Turkmen diplomatic mission. In his speech, the President of the Republic of Korea noted the feat of the Korean people in the struggle for independence, emphasised the desire for reunification, the need for a nuclear-free status of the peninsula, the development of cooperation with Japan and preparations for the APEC summit, which will be held in the country in the third quarter. During a brief conversation with Lee Jae-myung, the Ambassador of Turkmenistan conveyed congratulations and warm wishes on behalf of the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov and the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The Korean side expressed gratitude and sent greetings and best wishes in return.


Turkmenistan strengthens cooperation: overview of foreign policy activities in July

In July, Turkmenistan actively held a series of international meetings and negotiations in bilateral and multilateral formats dedicated to the development of political, economic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation, as well as issues of the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries, according to TDH. On 1 July, the Turkmen Foreign Affairs Minister held telephone negotiations with his counterparts from Niger, Burkina Faso, Malawi and Kazakhstan, where they discussed prospects for inter-state partnership and preparations for international forums. On 2 July, negotiations were held with the Foreign Affairs Ministers of the Central African Republic and Mali. In Brussels, the Turkmen delegation participated in sessions of the World Customs Organisation Council, where a Memorandum of Understanding was signed: the Training Centre under the State Customs Service was recognised as a regional training centre of the WCO. On 3 July, during a visit to Azerbaijan, the Foreign Affairs Minister of Turkmenistan met with President Ilham Aliyev, the Foreign Affairs Minister of Azerbaijan and representatives of Afghanistan, discussing energy, transport and trade issues. On 4 July, a Turkmen delegation participated in the 17th Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organisation in Azerbaijan, where negotiations were held with representatives of Pakistan and the UAE. Meetings were held in Ashgabat with a parliamentary delegation from Poland and the Minister of Budget of Nigeria. On 7 July, the Foreign Affairs Minister of Turkmenistan held telephone negotiations with his counterparts from Lesotho and Eswatini, and the Ambassador of Turkmenistan presented his credentials to the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic. In New York, the delegation participated in a high-level meeting at the UN headquarters. On 8 July, a telephone conversation was held with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas. On 10–11 July, negotiations were held with the Heads of Foreign Affairs agencies of Belarus, Moldova, Burundi, Chad and South Sudan. On 14 July, a meeting was held in Ashgabat with representatives of the PRC, and a joint communiqué on diplomatic relations with Rwanda was signed in New York. On 15–16 July, bilateral contacts continued with the UAE, New Zealand and other countries. On 16–17 July, National Leader of the Turkmen people Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov visited Azerbaijan, where he held negotiations with President Ilham Aliyev and the country’s leadership. In the days that followed, new diplomatic contacts were established with representatives of Uzbekistan, Tunisia, China, San Marino, the Seychelles and Thailand. Turkmenistan's activities in July covered a wide range of topics, from trade and economic cooperation and transport projects to cultural and humanitarian cooperation and participation in global initiatives.
